ARTIST BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: | Byoung-Woo Choi, who also goes by Danny, was born in Seoul, Korea and immigrated with his family to Toronto. He studied at Sheridan College in Ontario before coming to Alberta, where he earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Alberta College of Art + Design in 2010. He has also taught at the North Mount Pleasant Art Center of Calgary.
Workings with ceramics, Danny enjoys the process of creation and the idea that what he is creating will become part of the owner’s daily life. As such, functionality is as important as aesthetic beauty. For Danny, creation is an opportunity to escape, and he hopes that the eventual users of his pieces are also able to find moments of escape while using his creations.
Danny has received numerous scholarships and was selected to participate in Unity and Diversity, a Biennale Juried Exhibition in Cheongju, Korea (2009); and in the 5th International Competition of World Ceramic Biennale also in Korea (2009). He received the William & Mary Concoran Craft Award in 2007; an award from the Hamilton Region Guild of Potters in 2006; and the Betty Canto Silent Night Awards in 2005 and 2006. Danny’s work has been exhibited in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario, Philadelphia and South Korea.
