ARTIST BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Mindy Andrews’ imagination has always been stirred by the rustling leaves, textures, light and magic of Northwestern Ontario’s forests. Having grown up near Kenora, Ontario, Andrews’ work, which can be either functional or sculptural, is heavily influenced by trees and other images from nature. Sometimes her ceramic works feature the image of trees painted on using slips and underglazes; other times she carves to create the texture of bark on her pieces. Andrews relocated to Calgary in 1997 where the nearby wilderness of the Rocky Mountains continued to inspire her work. Andrews holds a BA from the University of Manitoba (1988), an Art and Design Diploma from Red Deer College (1999), and a BFA from the Alberta College of Art and Design in Calgary, Alberta (2002). Andrews actively participates in arts professional development activities both as a presenter and a participant, and she also teaches workshops at the North Mount Pleasant Arts Centre and the Wildflower Arts Centre for the City of Calgary. In 2014, she held a residency at the Medalta Museum in the Historic Clay District of Medicine Hat. Her work shows across North America and extensively around Alberta, and in 2010 she was honoured as a recipient of the Alberta Craft Council Award of Achievement. Compiled 2014
