ARTIST BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: | John Borrowman is a potter who lives and works in Canmore, Alberta. Borrowman was born in 1950 in Montreal, Quebec. He attended the University of New Brunswick and received his training in pottery at Georgian College in Barrie, Ontario and as an apprentice and later journeyman potter at Wilton Pottery in Wilton, Ontario. In 1975, he and his wife, Lynn, relocated to Canmore where he joined several other local potters as a partner in the newly established Stonecrop Studios.
From 1980 to 1985, Borrowman moved to the British Columbia interior to operate the Notch Hill Pottery Studio. In 1985, he returned to Canmore and to Stonecrop. He has owned and operated the Quest Gallery of Canadian Craftsmanship in Banff and The Avens Gallery in Canmore. In 1991, he opened Of Cabbages and Kings, a pottery studio and gallery that he now operates with his daughter Katie Borrowman, who is also a potter.
Borrowman has exhibited his work in exhibitions across Canada, and it is included in collections such as the Bronfman Corporate Collection and the Massey Foundations Collection of Contemporary Ceramics. He is an active member of Canmore’s arts community and has been involved in community life through several Nordic skiing, parent, tourism and economic development organizations. Borrowman served two terms as a Canmore Town Councillor and was elected Mayor in 2012.
