| ARTIST BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: | Born and raised in Edmonton, Engley’s goal has been to present new perspectives on familiar Alberta landscapes. Throughout his high school art classes he was exposed to different art traditions, but was especially interested in Impressionism. After graduation, he earned a Diploma in Graphic Design and Illustration from what was then Grant MacEwan College, in 1995. He worked in graphic design for ten years thereafter, including several years with Lone Pine Publishing. He is otherwise self-taught. His paintings are primarily acrylic on canvas and computer-generated typographic images.
Engley specializes in local Edmonton scenes, such as the Walterdale Bridge, the Highlevel Bridge, and the Fringe Festival; he is also interested in prairie scenes. He travels the province with his camera, then paints in his home studio. He also creates digital landscapes, experimenting with different styles and with different types of mark-making. His cityscapes often feature a partial view of a familiar landmark, rendered tone-on-tone or in non-representational colours, and textured with lines or patterns. His style has been referred to as pointillist, impressionist, mosaic or even Lego-like.
Elliot participates in the Whyte Avenue Artwalk and Art in Our Park. He exhibits at the Sugarbowl Café and TIX on the Square in Edmonton, and at the Art Market, TELUS Convention Centre, Calgary.
