| OTHER HOLDINGS: | Chaba, Sherri | ARTIST BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: | Born and raised in Alberta, Sherri Chaba has an intense connection with the land. Inspiration for much of her work comes from her experience with her family’s land being drastically altered by a pipeline being pushed through their property. Through drawings, sculptures and installation pieces, Sherri strives to show the interconnectedness of humans and their environments and the impact of the progress of technology and development. Sherri also takes inspiration from the post-apocalyptic world of Cormac McCarthy’s 2006 novel, The Road. Sherri’s installations are an immersive experience, in which the viewer becomes part of the piece. The viewer is encouraged to see themselves and the environment, and its preservation, in a new light.
After completing her Fine Art Diploma at the MacEwan Centre for the Arts, Sherri earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Master of Fine Arts, specializing in drawing and intermedia, from the University of Alberta. In addition to focusing on her work, Sherri has taught at the University of Alberta and is the Lead Artist at the Nina Haggerty Center for the Arts in Edmonton. Her works have been shown provincially and nationally, and she has works in the permanent collections of the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, the University of Alberta and MacEwan University. Sherri has received a variety of awards and grants, including the Florence Andison Friedman Award.
