| OTHER HOLDINGS: | Williamson, Doug | ARTIST BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: | Doug Williamson is a painter drawn to the methods of the old masters. He blends strong visual concepts with a mastery of traditional painting techniques, using various approaches from both new and old. His subjects range from the figurative to still life, with each painting a dimensional story told through the facet of an object or the face of a character.
Williamson’s dramatically lit compositions give tension and dialogue to his work. The still life objects he selects tend to evoke nostalgic idealism in the viewer, giving the old objects a sense of reverence and importance.
Williamson came to painting after graduating in sculpture from the University of Calgary. He later studied with American portrait artist David Leffel. This neo-classical training facilitated the “alla prima” wet into wet style and deepened his respect and reverence for this approach. Williamson’s work tries to honour the past technically, the present conceptually, and the future expectantly.
Williamson has participated in residencies at The Banff Centre, and travelled to The Nerdrum School in Norway to study with the world-renowned figurative painter Odd Nerdrum. Williamson exhibits regularly in Alberta and British Columbia, and his work is held in numerous private and corporate collections across Canada, the United States, and Europe.
Williamson lives and works in Calgary.
