| OTHER HOLDINGS: | Anysas-Salkauskas, Ilse | ARTIST BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: | Ilse Anysas-Salkauskas credits her creativity with textiles to the skills she learned from her mother and inherited from many generations of artistic women in her family. Born in Berlin, Germany to parents who were Lithuanian refugees, Anysas-Salkauskas learned as a child to knit, crochet, embroider and sew.
Anysas-Salkauskas’s fibre art is influenced by personal and family experiences and by the Alberta and prairie foothills environment she calls home. She is known as a leader in the contemporization of fibre arts in Alberta and has taught children and adult continuing education art classes for the Calgary Board of Education and the Alberta College of Art and Design. She studied biology at both the University of Illinois in Chicago and the University of Waterloo and holds a diploma in fibre art and printing (1980) from the Alberta College of Art. She took part in a Leighton Colony Independent Residency at the Banff Centre for the Arts. As a member of the Alberta Society of Artists, Anysas-Salkauskas has served in a variety of positions, including as their Provincial Membership Coordinator. She was the featured artist at the 2006 SewFest in Calgary, and her work has been exhibited in Canada, the US, Korea and Japan.
