ARTIST BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Greg Payce is one of Canada’s most outstanding ceramic artists with a 2013 Governor-General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts. Payce earned a BFA from the University of Alberta (Edmonton, 1977) followed by further study in ceramics (The Banff Centre, 1982-84), art history coursework (University of Victoria, 1984-85), and an MFA at the Nova Scotia College of Art & Design (1987). In 2015, Payce retired as a faculty member in the ceramics department of the Alberta College of Art + Design (Calgary, AB) where he taught since 1989. The artist is known for his virtuoso craftsmanship, decorative flair, appropriation of ancient and European ceramic forms, and more recently, incorporating video and photography into his work to animate his expertly thrown pots. Illusion and perception are a particular interest as Greg has participated in over 150 group and solo exhibitions including a prestigious solo showing at the Gardiner Museum of Ceramic Art (Toronto, ON) in 2012 with a full-colour catalogue. His work can be found in numerous private and public collections including the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, the Art Gallery of Alberta, the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, the Banff Centre for Arts & Creativity, the Burlington Art Gallery, the Canadian Embassy (Japan), the Gardiner Museum, and the Glenbow Museum.
