| | OTHER HOLDINGS: | Burgess, Catherine | | ARTIST BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: | Catherine Burgess is a sculptor whose work has been the subject of considerable media attention and critical recognition. She began exhibiting her work in 1977 at a group show entitled Circa ’77 at Latitude 53 in Edmonton, Alberta. Since then, her art has been featured in dozens of group and solo exhibitions in Edmonton, other parts of Alberta and Canada, and the United States. She has completed several commissioned public art projects: “Return” (Edmonton Community Foundation, Jasper Avenue, 2001) and “The Big Rock” made in collaboration with Sandra Bromley (City of Edmonton, Rice Howard Way, 1995) are found in Edmonton; “Things as They Are” is part of the Donald Forester Sculpture Park in Guelph, Ontario; and “Sanctuary” is found at the Mineral Springs Hospital in Banff, Alberta. She, along with Walter Jules and Royden Mills, founded Triangle, a three-person artist collective that has worked on several urban projects in Edmonton and Sherwood Park. Catherine Burgess has served on the executive committee of the governing council of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts and as the Regional Chair for Alberta.
Burgess graduated from the University of Alberta in 1975 with a BFA. In 1974, she attended Yale at Norfolk at Yale University, Connecticut. She has participated in the Triangle Artists Workshop in Pine Plains, New York; the Hardingham Sculpture Workshop in Norfolk, England; and the Emma Lake Artists’ Workshop in northern Saskatchewan. She also partook in expeditions on the Old Man River and to McIntyre Ranch that were organized by the Canadian Art Odysseys Society. Burgess has served as a visiting artist to university level art schools and programs across Alberta and in Ontario and has worked as a sessional lecturer for the University of Alberta. Her works are found in public collections across Canada. She lives and works in Edmonton.
