ARTIST BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Bradley Keys is a ceramic artist whose hand-built ceramic pieces incorporate the rhythms and colors of the prairies, the mountains, and the rivers. With a subtle hand and through his deep understanding of ceramic forms and glazes, Keys explores and portrays the natural world as it relates to built objects in the landscape, and investigates how we know, take in, and are affected by the natural and built environment. Keys studied at the Alberta College of Art + Design, and the Nova Scotia Art and Design. Keys also graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree, which continues to inform his ceramic production even today. He constantly experiments with different construction techniques, textures, glazes, and finishes in order to capture the essence of something that inspires awe, such as “the colours of a stormy prairie sky at dusk, the textures of grass blowing in the wind, or the pattern of light cutting through a crystal clear mountain to the rocks below.” It is through these elements that Keys creates work that quietly reveals itself over time. Key’s work has been recognized on the local, provincial, and international level, and has been featured in many publications. He taught and worked as the ceramic technician at the Alberta College of Art + Design, and now works full time in his studio in Calgary.
