ARTIST BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Blair Brennan is an Edmonton-born artist whose sculpture, installation work, photographs / photo-based works, drawings, book works and works on paper have been widely exhibited in Edmonton and across Canada. Brennan received his BFA from the University of Alberta in 1981. He lives and works in Edmonton and has been involved with a number of Edmonton galleries and arts organizations as a volunteer, at the board and committee level, and as a staff member. He has worked at the then-Edmonton Art Gallery and the University of Alberta’s FAB Gallery and he has a long-time association with Latitude 53. Brennan’s works are held in private and public collections, including the Art Gallery of Alberta, the Glenbow Museum and the Winnipeg Art Gallery. He has curated several exhibitions in Edmonton working with local artists and has regularly delivered talks and lectures as a guest artist or sessional instructor. Beginning in 1985, Brennan worked with Brian Webb and the Brian Webb Dance Company to develop a series of collaborative performances and installations. The ritualistic performances have been presented and exhibited in Edmonton, Calgary, Vancouver, Montreal, Toronto and Ottawa. Brennan’s understanding of the ritualistic nature of visual and performance art has been the foundation for many of his works which often deal with religion, ecstatic experiences, language and magic. Brennan is a published writer who has contributed to several Canadian arts and cultural publications, including Artichoke, Border Crossings and C Magazine a publication for international contemporary art. In 2012, he completed a six-month writer in residence appointment for Latitude 53. His writing portfolio also includes artistic works created by branding words on paper, leather or other materials, using branding irons Brennan has forged and welded himself. Compiled 2014
