ARTIST BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Matt Gould is a multidisciplinary artist whose visual art practice has included painting, drawing, book illustration and more recently fibre art (embroidery on vintage fabric & assemblage). From 1979 to 2000 he painted numerous commission portraits, exhibited paintings, and created cover art and illustrated children’s books for Oxford University Press (Toronto, ON) and Reidmore Books (Edmonton, AB). Since the mid-2000s, Gould has focused on needlework challenging male stereotypes and gender roles. Materials such as linen, industrial wool felt, gingham and scissor-cut leather serve as the canvas upon which he draws, employing hand and machine embroidery. The imagery is generally figurative, dealing with masculine identity, gay and popular culture. Gould’s creations have a child-like quality and simplicity that on occasion, have been sculptural as in his leather portraits and totemic items for Totems of the Masculine (2014) displayed on stands. Over the past thirty-five years, the artist has exhibited almost annually. Recent shows include the juried Prairie Excellence (2010), awarded best mid-career submission by Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba craft councils; “words, wit, wisdom and wool” solo exhibit, Exposure Queer Arts Festival and Alberta Craft Council (2010, Edmonton, AB) and Totems of the Masculine, Red Deer Museum and Art Gallery and Alberta Craft Council (2014).
