ARTIST BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Dick Averns is a member of the Alberta College of Art and Design’s faculty where he teaches liberal studies, sculpture, installation, performance and drawing. He has developed new curricula and piloted courses in performance and installation. His academic experience began with an Institute of Management Services Diploma Course (1986) at South East London College in his home town of London, UK. Four years later, he attended a summer school program at the Parsons School of Art and Design in New York (1990), followed by a Diploma in Art and Design from the Wimbledon School of Art (1993), a BFA Honours in sculpture from Cheltenham and Gloucester College, and an MFA in fine art studio from the University of British Columbia (2003). Averns is a published art critic and writer, a researcher and an active member of the professional arts community. Averns multidisciplinary work has been exhibited and performed in Canada, the US, Australia, the UK and the Middle East. Among other ideas, his art deals with conflict, identity, mental health and the commodification of space. During 2008 and 2009, Averns was deployed to the Middle East as an official war artist as a part of the Canadian Forces Artists Program. Compiled 2014
