ARTIST BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Dan Hudson began his practice in the mid-1980s as a representational painter. His paintings were characterized by rich and textured paint handling. Subjects included animals, people, landscapes and later, still life with contemporary subject matter sometimes related to modern consumer goods. More recently, his art has become more project-based incorporating and combining various media including photography, time-lapsed video, painting and assemblages with video components. The artist describes his work as a form of visual anthropology intersecting with scientific research, documentary practices, his own personal journal, and art. A long-time resident of the mountain community, Canmore, AB, nature and the environment, animal life and the human presence, seasons and the celestial sky have all been subjects in his work. In addition, there is the contrast provided by several residencies in Berlin where he observed and recorded contemporary life that he then assembled into multi-screened video presentations. Dan Hudson is a 1984 BFA graduate of York University (Toronto ON) with studies in anthropology at University of California from 1981 to 1982. He completed a studio residency at the Banff Centre (now Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity) in 1984. The artist has received numerous awards for his art such as the Motion Photography Prize, Saatchi Gallery (London), Shortlist, 2014; Global Art & Moving Images Award (Cologne, Germany), 2013; NordArt Contemporary Art Exhibition (Büdelsdorf, Germany), Public Choice Award, 2011; and Art Film/Video Montecatini (Milano, Italy), Honourable Mention, 2011. Hudson is also the recent subject of three solo exhibitions, each with a publication: Theories of Entanglement: The Art of Dan Hudson (Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies, 2014); 1.6 Million Miles A Day (AFA Travelling Exhibition Program, Esplanade Gallery, Medicine Hat AB, 2016) and 360 and other Journeys (Nickle Galleries, Calgary AB, 2016).
