Frederick Arthur Verner was interested in becoming an artist at a young age, and was greatly inspired by the work of Paul Kane. In 1856, Verner moved to London, England to study at Heatherly's Art School. After four years of art school, Verner enlisted in the British Army. He returned to Canada (Toronto) in 1862 and began working as a photographer. He later became a painter of Native Peoples and extensively studied the Buffalo. Verner is most known for his paintings that portray the people, wildlife and landscapes of the Western Canadian plains.
In 1880, Verner moved back to London, England where he remained for the rest of his life. While living in London, he made frequent visits back to Canada for painting expeditions and to show his work in Toronto. He became a member of the Royal Canadian Academy in 1893.
