ARTIST BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: The Lemieux family spent summers near Montmorency Falls and Kent House. It was here that the young Jean Paul Lemieux met American Painter, Parnell. After watching Parnell in his studio, Jean Paul Lemieux began to do his own sketches. This was the beginning of his interest in becoming an artist. Lemieux's family left Quebec in 1916 to spend a year in the warmer climate of Berkeley, California with the hope of helping his sister through a difficult period of rheumatism. After returning to Canada (Montreal) in 1917, Lemieux attended College Mont-Saint-Louis and Loyola College. In 1926, he decided to seriously pursue his dream of becoming an artist and enrolled at l'Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He studied here until 1934, with an interruption from 1929-1930 to visit Paris. From 1934 to 1935, he taught at l'Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Montreal, and at l'Ecole du Meuble from 1935 to 1937. In 1937, he relocated again to teach at l'Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Quebec City where he remained until 1965. Lemieux worked in many media, including oils, watercolour, pastel, tempera, gouache, charcoal and ink. Lemieux was inducted to the Order of Canada in 1968. He was also a member of the Royal Canadian Academy. His work is found in many private and public collections including those of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, the National Gallery of Canada, and the Art Gallery of Ontario.
