HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: The National Council of Jewish Women of Canada was formed in 1897 in Toronto, Ontario. The purpose of the organization was to supply services of a charitable nature to poor and needy persons, and to foster a program devoted to social welfare, community affairs, education, and international understanding. The Edmonton Section of the National Council of Jewish Women of Canada was established in Edmonton, Alberta in 1920. It was formed out of a Ladies’ Aid group, which had existed in Edmonton prior to 1920. The early program of the National Council of Jewish Women of Canada, Edmonton Section concentrated on immediate community needs. The first duty of the organization was to carry out the social welfare work needed at that time. Its second duty was to establish the Talmud Torah, and to support Jewish Education. The organization also supported other local programs including the Jewish Golden Age Club, mental health groups, youth groups, and was part of a committee that organized the Edmonton School Readiness Centre. The National Council of Jewish Women of Canada is a member of the UNESCO Canadian Subcommission of the Status of Women, the Coalition of Jewish Women Against Domestic Violence, and the Coalition for Agunot Rights. It is also an affiliate member of the International Council of Jewish Women.
CUSTODIAL HISTORY:The National Council of Jewish Women of Canada, Edmonton Section deposited the first accession of records in 1975. In 1998, Gloria Aaron deposited two more accessions of records on behalf of the National Council of Jewish Women of Canada, Edmonton Section.
SCOPE AND CONTENT: Fonds consists of records of the National Council of Jewish Women of Canada, Edmonton Section including correspondence, reports, financial records, by-laws, minutes, photographs, and film.
