ADMINISTRATIVE
HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: The Rotary Club of Edmonton was officially inaugurated on March 30, 1916 at the Hudsonia Café in Edmonton. The Club was given Charter Number 214 and the main office of the downtown Club was located at the MacDonald Hotel. On April 1, 1916, the Rotary Club of Edmonton was admitted to Rotary International, which is an umbrella organization linking Rotary Clubs all over the world. After a district rezoning was undertaken in 1997, the Edmonton club became a part of District 5370. The objective of the Rotary is fourfold:1)To encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster the development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service. 2)Encourage high ethical standards in business and professions; recognize the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying by each Rotarian of his occupation as an opportunity to serve society.3)The application of the ideal of service by every Rotarian to his personal, business and community life.4)The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional men united in the ideal of service.The Club has also been known throughout its history as an organization actively involved in community service. By the 1980’s the Rotary Club of Edmonton had several significant and steady sources of revenue such as: Klondike Raffle, Casinos, 300 Raffle and Christmas Cheer. The monies generated from these endevours have helped a variety of organizations from the Y.M.C.A. to the Salvation Army to Fort Edmonton Park to a number of local hospitals and individuals.
SCOPE AND CONTENT: The fonds consists of the following series: Constitution (1922-1990); Minutes of both the Board of Directors and the regular meetings (1918-1990); Administrative Correspondence (1913-2000); Membership (1916-1991); Accounts (1918-1999); Committees (1935-1997); Newsletters (1916-2000); Events (1917-1991); Miscellaneous (1922-1999); and, Rotary International (1916-1998).
ARRANGEMENT NOTE: An arrangement was imposed on this material in the first accession, subsequent accruals have followed this initial arrangement.
