HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Grace Martin was born on December 2, 1879 in North Dakota. Her parents were David and Margaret (nee McCradie) Martin and she was the oldest of their eleven children. In July 1899 the family moved to South Edmonton where David Martin had purchased 320 acres of land.Grace Martin attended the high school taught by D. S. McKenzie at the Niblock Street School, and in 1901 attended Normal School in Regina, Saskatchewan. Upon her return to Edmonton, Alberta she began teaching at the first school to be built in the Ellerslie district, which was named in honor of Frank Oliver, who was the sole representative in Ottawa, Ontario from the District of Alberta.In 1903 Martin moved to the village of Leduc, Alberta to teach the primary room where she met the principal of the school, Donald C. McEachern. They were married on August 18, 1904 and had one son, Donald McEachern. Donald McEachern senior died in 1946.In 1972, to mark the 70th anniversary of the building of Oliver School, and to honor the first teacher of that school, Grace Martin McEachern, the Grace Martin Elementary school in Edmonton in the neighborhood of Millwoods, was officially opened.
CUSTODIAL HISTORY:Mrs. Grace Martin McEachern deposited these records in the Provincial Archives of Alberta in three separate accessions. Accession PR1971.267 was deposited in 1971, PR1973.282 was deposited in 1973, and PR1978.273 was deposited in 1978.
SCOPE AND CONTENT: Fonds consists of a diary of George Drinnen, a cousin of Grace Martin, souvenir programmes, publications about the early history of Edmonton, Confederation, and Strathcona High School, and photographs.
