HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: The Edmonton Trades and Labour Council was founded December 2, 1905. The original membership of five trade unions represented about 1000 trade unionists in Edmonton and was created to provide Edmonton Unions a united voice in negotiations with business interests. The first president was A. J. Kinney, a member of Edmonton Local 1325 of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners. The Edmonton Trades and Labour Council merged with the Edmonton Labour Council (ELC) on January 11, 1958 to form the Edmonton and District Labour Council (EDLC) but continued to attempt to provide a united voice for union and labour interests in the city of Edmonton. Prior to the merger, the ELC was a more radical labour group that performed many of the same functions as the ETLC and competed with ETLC for labour membership.
