ADMINISTRATIVE
HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: The Edmonton Chamber Music Society was formed in 1954, with Dorothie Langmo as its founding president. The Society aimed to bring music that may not have been heard otherwise to an Edmonton audience. In the first years, members contributed to the Society through their membership fees, but also through performance. The Society organized concerts with local performers (such as the Edmonton Chamber Music Players and the De Camera Singers) but beginning in 1962, working in affiliation with Overture Concerts of Vancouver, the Society began presenting a subscription series of concerts with both local performers and prominent visiting performers from the other parts of Canada and around the world. The Society, which began with fifty members, had a membership of over five hundred within ten years. The structure of the Society was formalized in 1963, and the executive committee was expanded under the guidance of Russell Nye, President. The Society's concerts were and continue to be primarily held at Convocation Hall, on the University of Alberta campus in Edmonton, Alberta.
SCOPE AND CONTENT: The fonds consists of the records of the Edmonton Chamber Music Society, including executive committee minutes, annual general meeting minutes, financial statements, correspondence, membership lists, programs, newspaper reviews, committee reports, and scrapbooks containing photographs, reviews and programs from Edmonton Chamber Music Society concerts.
GENERAL NOTE: Information for the administrative history is from the records and the Edmonton Chamber Music Society website, http://www.freenet.edmonton.ab.ca/ecms/, accessed May 7, 2004.
