HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: The Canadian Club movement traces its origins to Hamilton, Ontario, where the first Canadian Club was established in 1893 to encourage the study of the history, literature and resources of Canada, recognize Canadian worth and talent and foster a patriotic Canadian sentiment. A second Canadian Club was formed in Toronto in 1897, and the first Women’s Canadian Club was formed in Montreal, Quebec in 1907. The Women’s Canadian Club of Edmonton was formed October 30, 1911, following a proposal made by Emily Murphy at the October 26, 1911 meeting of the Local Council of Women of Edmonton and Strathcona. The Women’s Canadian Club of Edmonton executive met on January 8, 1912, and the inaugural luncheon of the Club was held at the King Edward Hotel on January 20, 1912. Emily Murphy served as the first president of the Women’s Canadian Club of Edmonton. The initial purpose of Club was to foster patriotism, to encourage the study of the institutions, history, arts, literature and resources of Canada, and to unite Canadians in such work for the welfare and progress of the Dominion. An early cause which drew support from the Edmonton Club was the effort to preserve Fort Edmonton. Over the years, members have gathered and continue to gather to hear distinguished Canadians or visitors speak on issues of national and international importance.
