HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: The Casualties Union Study Circle No. 228 Edmonton began in Edmonton, Alberta in July 1954; there were nine members. The group was formed to provide the Civil Defense with more realistic emergency demonstrations. The Edmonton Casualties Union Study Circle was associated with the Casualties Union, which was based in London, England. The Casualties Union was founded November 22, 1942 and evolved from the Surrey County Civil Defense Rescue School where live casualties were used in rescue training. During the war, the opportunity of training as a casualty was offered by the Casualties Union, and while the necessity of the Casualties Union was questioned after the war, it continued to serve the needs of peace-time first aid training. The Study Circles were formed to learn the Casualties Union technique from written instructions in the absence of a qualified Casualties Union instructor. The Edmonton group received their official member July 28, 1956.
SCOPE AND CONTENT: The fonds consists of the records of the Casualties Union Study Circle No. 228 Edmonton and includes log notes, Study Circle instructions, casualty simulation instructions, correspondence, and newspaper clippings.
GENERAL NOTE: Information for the administrative history is taken from the Casualties Union website, http://www.casualtiesunion.org.uk/, accessed March 14, 2006 and from the records.
