After living in Conklin, Alberta and Ferguson, British Columbia, where Ray worked in Assayer for a mining company, the Martins returned to Alberta Beach, Alberta, when the mine in Assayer closed. Ray then sought work in the United States, eventually finding work in California. While away, his daughter Marlene Helen was born in Edmonton, Alberta on February 10, 1939. Ray then found work at a mine in Idaho, and Viola and the children moved to Kellogg, Idaho in December of 1939. The Martins later lived at various locations in California and in Victoria, British Columbia. Vi and Ray eventually moved to Florida.
