ADMINISTRATIVE
HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: The Edmonton Women’s Place Society was established after the women, most likely those involved with the Edmonton Options for Women Council, realized that they needed to organize to be able to take advantage of community resources. The Society was incorporated under the Societies Act on July 26, 1974. The Society’s objectives were to facilitate greater interaction of women’s groups and individuals in the Edmonton area and across Canada by serving as a clearing house and resource and information centre; to serve as a meeting place or common ground for local women’s groups and individuals; to promote greater community awareness and knowledge of the rights and status of women; and to organize and instigate action with these local groups and women as well as others throughout Canada aimed at gaining equal rights and opportunities for all women in Canada. Women’s Place opened in the February 1975 and was located located at Terra House (9917-116 Street). The Society appears to have reported to the Edmonton Options for Women Council.
SCOPE AND CONTENT: The sous-fonds consists of the records of Edmonton Women’s Place Society and includes minutes, correspondence, grant applications, incorporation records, bylaws, newsletters, copies of leases, and distress log books. The sous-fonds also includes one series, the Library records.
GENERAL NOTE: Information for the administrative history is taken from the Alberta Gazette and from the records.
