HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: In 1935, Beatrice Carmichael founded the Edmonton Civic Opera Society. Beatrice also served as its first Artistic Director. The Society sought to arrange concerts, produce opera, and coordinate musical performances with other organizations in Edmonton. Membership cost $3.00. The Society offered three types of membership: Honorary Membership, Associate Membership, and Associate to Regular Membership. An Executive consisting of a President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Librarian, and representatives from at least five sections of the orchestra managed the association. The Executive appointed a Musical Director, Dramatic Director, and an Advertising Manager. In 1955, the Edmonton Civic Opera Society disbanded, and the Edmonton Capital Choral Society formed in its place.
CUSTODIAL HISTORY:In 1991, R.M. Currie donated the material to the Provincial Archives of Alberta. R.M. Currie’s relationship with the society is unknown.
SCOPE AND CONTENT: The fonds consists of financial statements, programs, newspaper clippings, programs, and scores related to the activities of the Edmonton Civic Opera Society dating from 1939-1955, and 4 audio recordings of the Edmonton Civic Opera Society.
