ADMINISTRATIVE
HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Fort Saskatchewan District, a court of the Methodist Church, was established in 1907 under the jurisdiction of Alberta Conference. The bounds of the district included circuits in the vicinity of Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta and changes over time are documented in the year books published by the Methodist Church. There is evidence in the records (in the form of a minute book started by Fort Saskatchewan District and carried on under Lamont District) to suggest that Lamont District succeeded Fort Saskatchewan District after it was ceased to exist in 1912, with some circuits being transferred to Edmonton East Circuit and others being situated under the newly created Lamont District. As with all Methodist Church districts, Fort Saskatchewan District had oversight of the Methodist congregations within its bounds, and for clergy, laymen, the examination of students, church property, finances and social work. Officers of the district included the Chairman and a number of secretaries, including Financial, Journal, Statistical, Evangelism and Social Service, Missionary, and Religious Education Secretaries. Fort Saskatchewan District continued to exist until ca. 1911-1912 when it is no longer listed as a district in the 1912 Methodist Year Book. Fort Saskatchewan proper and other circuits in that vicinity are listed as circuits under Edmonton East District from 1912-1925. In 1925, The Methodist Church united with the Presbyterian Church in Canada and the Congregational Churches of Canada to form the United Church of Canada and the 1926 United Church Year Book lists congregations in the vicinity as being situated in Edmonton Presbytery.
CUSTODIAL HISTORY:Records deposited under accession number PR1975.0387 were acquired sometime prior to 1975 however there is no surviving record of the details. In 1975, the Conference entered into a permanent loan agreement with the Provincial Archives of Alberta (PAA) for the physical custody and control of the holdings of the Conference Archives and the records were relocated to the PAA in that same year. Records received after 1975 have come from the congregation, church members, or officers of the presbytery or the Conference.
