| HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: | The Presbytery of Edmonton was erected on June 10, 1896 on the authority of the General Assembly of The Presbyterian Church in Canada. Prior to 1896, the region was administered by the Presbytery of Calgary. The Presbytery of Edmonton was originally situated in the Synod of British Columbia (later re-named Synod of British Columbia and Alberta); and in 1907 was again transferred to the newly created Synod of Alberta.
Originally, the Presbytery of Edmonton administered the work and life of the Presbyterian Church in the northern half of the province, with the dividing line being approximately east and west through Didsbury. Over time, as the population of the region increased, so too did the work of the Presbytery. In 1904, the presbytery was reconstituted with new boundaries when the Presbytery of Red Deer was erected. In 1907, the Presbytery of Edmonton was again reconstituted upon the erection of the Presbytery of Lacombe and the Presbytery of Vermilion, regions previously within the bounds of the Presbytery of Edmonton. The final division of the presbytery occurred in 1920 when the Presbytery of Peace River was erected. By 1925, its boundaries were the vicinity of Edmonton and the immediate area.
The Presbytery had oversight of the Presbyterian congregations within its bounds. As a court of the Presbyterian Church, the presbytery was responsible for church property, missions, Sunday Schools, Young People's Societies, statistics and finance, colleges and the examination of students, and the review of church records. Like all presbyteries, its officers included a moderator, a clerk, a treasurer, clergy and elders.
The Presbytery of Edmonton continued to function until 1925 when The Presbyterian Church in Canada united with The Methodist Church and The Congregational Churches of Canada to form The United Church of Canada. The Presbytery of Edmonton was dissolved in 1925 when its members joined The United Church and the new entity known as The United Church of Canada Edmonton Presbytery was created.
As the Presbyterian vote in favour of Union was not unanimous, The Presbyterian Church in Canada continued to exist after 1925 for those Presbyterian members who did not join The United Church of Canada. The Presbytery of Edmonton continued to exist as a post-Union Presbyterian entity.

| CUSTODIAL HISTORY: | Records deposited under accession number PR1975.0387 were acquired sometime prior to 1975 however there is no surviving record of the details. In 1975, the Conference entered into a permanent loan agreement with the Provincial Archives of Alberta (PAA) for the physical custody and control of the holdings of the Conference Archives and the records were relocated to the PAA in that same year. |
