HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Susan Margaret Rogers was born in 1889. She married Roderic Brodford (Rod) Gunn on December 28, 1911. They had two children: Brad and Helen. They homesteaded the northeast quarter of section 31, Township 46, Range 2, West of the 4th Meridian (3-46-2-W4). Involvement with The United Farmers of Alberta occupied most of Susan's life, initially at a local level. However from 1924 to 1929 she served as president of a branch of the United Farm Women of Alberta (UFWA). She also served as president of a successor organization, the Farm Women's Union of Alberta from 1949 to 1951. Additionally, she was the first Young People's Convenor (UFA) in 1919 and Convenor of the Educational Committee of the UFWA in 1922. Susan Gunn was also a member of the Board of Governors of the University of Alberta for a number of years. Following Rod's death in 1965, Susan lived with her son Brad. Susan died in December 1989.
CUSTODIAL HISTORY:Suzanne Maynard, on behalf of Kenneth B. Gunn, the grandson of Susan Gunn, deposited the records in the Provincial Archives of Alberta in 2004.
SCOPE AND CONTENT: The fonds consists of magazines, correspondence, pamphlets, handbooks, and newspaper clippings related to Susan Gunn's work with the UFWA. The fonds also consists of correspondence between Roy Wilson, a University of Alberta history student, and Susan Gunn. The correspondence relates to his thesis, and the fonds includes a copy of his thesis, "Henry Wise Wood and the Ideology of Western Canadian Agrarianism."
