HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH:

The Edmonton Photo Club, originally named the Edmonton Cine Club, formed in December 1938 in part to promote cinematography and also in response to an increased interest in home filmmaking. Presenting silent movies on black and white film initially comprised the main activity of the Edmonton Cine Club. The club gave groups composed of three or four members several rolls of film and asked the groups to produce a film. At the Annual General Meeting, the club critiqued the films, and awarded the winning group a trophy.

With the help of the ladies' organization "The Picturettes", the Edmonton Cine Club flourished. Bake sales, craft sales, teas and raffles raised money for the purchase of screens, projectors and trophies. During the Second World War, movie film became difficult to acquire, and the club added slide shows in lieu of films. In 1949, the Edmonton Cine Club renamed itself The Edmonton Movie and Photo Club, but in 1968 the Club underwent another name change, and became The Edmonton Photo Club. With the advent of color film, the club expanded its mandate to include color films, and it continued the exhibition of slides. In the past, the club facilitated field trips to offer members the chance to produce wildlife photos. In addition, the club organized photographic competitions, slide shows and public showings of members' photos.

The Edmonton Photo Club disbanded in 2014.
