| LEVEL OF DESCRIPTION: | Fonds | No.: | PR2044 | TITLE: | Edmonton Handi-Buses Association fonds | CREATOR: | The Edmonton Handi-Buses Association | DATE RANGE: | 1969-1988 | EXTENT: | 0.85 m of textual records | ADMINISTRATIVE | HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: | The Edmonton Handi-Buses Association was incorporated under the Societies Act on April 22, 1969 to operate and maintain a transportation service for handicapped persons in Edmonton and area; the Association had previously been a division of the Edmonton Cerebral Palsy Association as part of a pilot project. The service began in November 1969. In 1971, their clientele was increased to include elderly and needy persons. Beginning in 1974, Edmonton City Council approved the recommendation that the Disabled Adult Transportation System (D.A.T.S.) be contracted out; the Edmonton Handi-Buses Association provided this service from June 1975 until December 1981. Following its involvement with D.A.T.S., the Association became more involved in transportation of handicapped children to schools. The Edmonton Handi-Buses Association was a member agency of the United Way of Edmonton and Area from 1969 until April 1, 1985. The services of the Association were suspended at the end of June 1988 and vehicles were sold; this was a result after their contract to transport handicapped children to Edmonton Public Schools was not renewed and awarded to another organization. The Association was run by a Board of Directors and an Executive Director. The Edmonton Handi-Buses Association was officially dissolved in 1990. | SCOPE AND CONTENT: | The fonds consists of the records of the Edmonton Handi-Buses Association and includes records relating to contracts with the City of Edmonton (to operate D.A.T.S.) and the Edmonton Public School Board including correspondence, minutes, agreements and contracts; the fonds also includes general correspondence, Board minutes, budget reports, financial statements, insurance records, certificates, permits, and bus schedules. | GENERAL NOTE: | Information for the administrative history is taken from the Alberta Gazette and from the records. |
