This local association had as its main objective the advancement of librarianship. According to the 1972 constitution, the Edmonton Library Association was to facilitate interaction among all people concerned with books, information and libraries, promote cooperation between libraries and information centres in the Edmonton area, advance the common interests of all those associated with libraries, exchange information and opinions through meetings, publications and other activities, stimulate public interest in library affairs, promote the legislation necessary to develop and maintain high standards of library service, and finally uphold the Canadian Library Association’s “Statement on Intellectual Freedom.” In 1980, steps were taken to change the name of the Association from the Edmonton Library Association to the Greater Edmonton Library Association; the change became effective in 1984, following the incorporation of the Greater Edmonton Library Association under the Societies Act on February 20, 1984. The Greater Edmonton Library Association (GELA) continues to facilitate the interaction between librarians, library technicians, library staff, students and other interested parties in Edmonton and surrounding areas.
