HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Howard and Robert Bouey Architects was an architectural firm in Edmonton, Alberta during the 1960s. The firm developed in 1963 when Howard Bouey joined the firm of Robert Bouey Architects, which had been established in 1961. Prior to 1961 the firm had a long history, dating back to 1892 when W.S. Edmiston established an architectural firm. Over the years the firm underwent a number of name changes as different architects became involved with the organisation. In 1895 the firm became Edmiston and Flater, and then Edmiston and Johnson in 1899. Six years later in 1905 Edmiston and Johnson became Johnson and Barnes. When R.P. Barnes left the organisation to start his own architectural firm, the name changed to Johnson and Lines in 1907. Two years later, H.D. Johnson started his own firm and Johnson and Lines became R.W. Lines in 1909. In 1914, the firm underwent another change and became W.G. Blakey. The name did not change again until 1947 when W.G. Blakey became Blakey and Blakey. Finally, in 1951 the firm became Blakey, Blakey and Ascher. This was the final name change before Robert Bouey Architects was established.
SCOPE AND CONTENT: Fonds consists of microfilm copies of architectural drawings prepared by the firm of Howard and Robert Bouey and their predecessors, dating from 1819 until 1964. Included are plans for churches, school buildings, hospitals, warehouses, hotels, theatres, stores, banks, office buildings, apartment blocks and residences. The majority of these buildings were situated in Edmonton, although a number were located in other Alberta communities and a few were in locations outside of the province.
ARRANGEMENT NOTE: The drawings are arranged according to the firm’s original numbering scheme. Reel 1 constitutes an index to the remainder of the material and also includes the Architects’ Job Register for the period.
