HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: | The first Edmonton branch of the United Empire Loyalists was founded in 1912 and was the first west of Toronto. The branch concentrated on genealogy over the course of its brief time span, which came to an end with the start of the First World War.
The second iteration of an Edmonton branch of the United Empire Loyalists was founded in 1934 by a group of male lawyers and doctors, supported by a Ladies Committee. The focus of this branch was to actively commemorate the arrival of Loyalists in Canada, collect books on Loyalist history, research Loyalist genealogy, and to encourage disciplinary action against children who refused to salute the flag of Great Britain. Similarly to the first branch, this second branch ceased activity as the pressures of the Second World War mounted.
The third and current iteration of an Edmonton branch of the United Empire Loyalists was founded in 1987 by Edmonton-based members of the Calgary branch. The president of the Calgary branch, Lois Cummings, felt that there were enough members in Edmonton to warrant a separate branch, which came into being on May 11, 1987. The focus of this branch was still on genealogical research into Loyalist roots, but this activity was supplemented by lecture series, social events, and hosting the 1999 national conference of the United Empire Loyalist Association. The branch also successfully lobbied the City of Edmonton to proclaim June 19th, 2010 as “United Empire Loyalists’ Day in Edmonton.”
