HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: The Franciscan Friars have been working in Western Canada since 1908 when they arrived at Fort Saskatchewan and Lamoureux, Alberta. In May, 1909, a temporary church-friary was built in Edmonton. Work on a permanent friary, a three-story brick structure, began in 1910. Construction of an adjacent church was initiated in 1911. In 1924, approval was granted for the establishment of a residential college, St. Anthony's College, which was built adjacent to the friary and closed in 1970. Newman Theological College opened in 1969. The friary houses the Provincial Office for Western Canada and is the residence for friar professors, semi-retired and retired friars. Falling numbers in the order forced the closure of the old friary and St. Francis of Assisi Church in 2007. Both served the Edmonton area for 100 years as of 2008. In 2008, the order's Western Canadian provincial office was relocated into Clement House at 81st Street and Jasper Avenue in Edmonton.
CUSTODIAL HISTORY:These films were donated by the Franciscan Friars of Western Canada in Edmonton who originally purchased them for their library. The films were culled from the Franciscans' library in preparation for their move to their new location in 2008.
