HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: The Independent Order of Foresters was founded in 1874 as a fraternal life insurance society. The Order was established in Canada in 1876, the first Court being in London, Ontario. The organization acted as a health and life insurance company for its members. The objectives of the Independent Order of Foresters were to unite fraternally all persons of sound body, mental health and good moral character under the age of 55; to give moral and material aid to its members and their dependents; to educate the members socially, morally, and intellectually; to establish a fund for the relief of sick and distressed members; to create a benefit fund for death benefits for widows and dependents of members; and to secure for its members free medical attendance, a sick benefit, a funeral benefit, a pension plan for members over the age of 70, and disability benefits. The South Edmonton Court, No. 1325, began in 1893.
CUSTODIAL HISTORY:The Provincial Archives of Alberta purchased the records from Tom Williams, of Tom Williams Books in Calgary, Alberta, in 1984.
SCOPE AND CONTENT: The fonds consists of the records of the Independent Order of Foresters. South Edmonton Court, No. 1325 and includes a minute book, which contains member lists and minutes.
ASSOCIATED MATERIAL: Other records pertaining to Alberta branches of the Independent Order of Foresters are located in the Strathcona Branch of the Independent Order of Foresters fonds at the City of Edmonton Archives in Edmonton, Alberta and the Independent Order of Foresters fonds and the Independent Order of Foresters. Chinook Court No. 1176 fonds at the Glenbow Archives in Calgary, Alberta.
