HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Peter Elzinga was born on April 6, 1944 in Edmonton, Alberta to Peter Elzinga and Susan Laanstra. He received his education from Bonnie Doon Composite High School and the Alberta School of Economic Science and Social Philosophy. After graduation, Peter Elzinga worked as rancher and a farmer. He married Patricia Nanninga of Edmonton on May 18, 1965. Peter and Patricia had three children: Gregory, Roger and Peter Burl. Peter Elzinga began his political career at the Federal level when he was elected to the House of Commons in 1974 as a Member of Parliament for Pembina. He resigned from Federal politics in 1986 to enter the Provincial Legislature for the constituency of Sherwood Park. In 1986, Peter Elzinga was appointed Minister of Agriculture. In 1989, Peter Elzinga was appointed Minister of Economic Development and Trade. In December 1992, he was appointed Deputy Premier and Minister of Federal and Intergovernmental Affairs and Minister Responsible for Government Reorganization. Elzinga did not seek re-election in the Alberta election of 1993 but continued in provincial politics serving as the Chief of Staff to the Office of the Honourable Ralph Klein, Premier of the Province of Alberta. Peter Elzinga served as the President of the Progressive Conservative (P.C.) Association of Canada (1983-1986) and Chairman of the 1983 P.C. Leadership Convention. He is a former Executive Director of the P.C. Association of Alberta and served as the Co-Chairman of Ralph Klein's leadership bid in 1992. He also served as the Chairman for the P.C. Provincial Campaign in 1993 and 1997. Peter Elzinga has been a member of the Chamber of Commerce, was a past Honourary Consul for the Federative Republic of Brazil, a former member of the Board of Directors for Edmonton Power and a former Vice President for Edmonton Northlands Park. Peter Elzinga, representing the Government of Alberta, served as a member of the Board of Directors for the 8th IAAF World Championships in Athletics held in Edmonton, 2001.
SCOPE AND CONTENT: The fonds consists of records created, used, or received during Peter Elzinga's term as Minister of Economic Trade and Development and during his term as Minister of Agriculture. The fonds consists of ministerial correspondence with municipal, federal, and provincial constituents, associations, societies, companies and other government agencies; annotated pamphlets and minutes of meetings; publications; and news releases.
