HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Maurice Stochinksy was born in Pishtonka, Ukraine in 1894 to Hova and Yehuda Stochinksy. He immigrated to Canada in 1912, settling in Edmonton, Alberta. Stochinsky was a member of the Canadian Expeditionary Force and served in France during World War 1. He lived briefly in Vancouver, British Columbia during the early 1920's, where he was secretary of the Shaarev Tzedeck Synagogue. He returned to Edmonton, Alberta in 1922. Stochinsky owned National Hardware Company in Edmonton and retired in 1968. In 1924, he married Anne Bloom. They had two children. Stochinsky was involved with numerous Jewish organizations in Alberta including the Congress Union of Western Canadian Jews Edmonton Branch, the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society of Canada Edmonton Branch, Edmonton Chevra Kasdisha, the Edmonton Jewish Community Council, the Edmonton Zionist Council, the Zionist Men's Association Herzl Lodge, Beth Israel Synagogue, the Talmud Torah, State of Israel Bonds, the Edmonton Jewish Federation, Jewish Family Service, the Jewish National Fund, and the Edmonton Hebrew Mutual Loan Association. He was also a member of the B'nai Brith Lodge 732 and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. Stochinsky was honoured by the Jewish Community at two testimonial dinners, the Negev Dinner in 1954 and the Beth Israel Synagogue in 1968. Stochinsky died in 1973. His wife Anne died in 1974. survived by his wife Anne, who died in 1974.
CUSTODIAL HISTORY:Mrs. Miriam Lieberman, a daughter of Maurice Stochinsky, deposited these records in the Provincial Archives of Alberta in 1975.
SCOPE AND CONTENT: The fonds reflects Stochinsky's participation in the Canadian Jewish community. The fonds consists of correspondence, resolutions, and a financial statement from Congress Union of Western Canada Jews, Edmonton Branch dating from 1916-1919; proposed bylaws and bylaws of the Edmonton Jewish Community Council dating from 1962; Records of the Edmonton Zionist Council and final records, donor lists, and receipts pertaining to the United Israel Appeal dating from 1946-1955; minutes, correspondence, and the opening and closing rituals of the Herzl Lodge dating from 1955; records regarding the hiring of a cantor, correspondence, membership lists, newspaper clippings, and photographs depicting cantors, menorahs, and Yahreit tablets dating from 1952-1971; minutes, membership lists, donor lists, financial records, and correspondence from the Shaarev Tzedeck Building Fund dating from 1920-1921; correspondence, donor lists, telegrams, bank statements, and bonds from the State of Israel Bonds campaign in Edmonton, Alberta dating from 1956-1960; minutes, financial records, articles of association, bylaws, and correspondence dating from 1927- 1961; photographs of Maurice Stochinsky in military uniform, on a baseball team, on the Edmonton Talmud Torah Board of Directors, in a synagogue, and participating in various community activities dating from; and an Edmonton Jewish War Efforts Committee donor list.
DATE NOTE: Included in this fonds is a biographical sketch of Maurice Stochinsky dated after his death.
