HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: H.C. (Herbert Charles) Wilson was born on December 7, 1859 to C.S. and Elizabeth (nee Biggar) Wilson in Picton, Ontario. He received his early education at Picton High School and Upper Canada College before going on to Ontario College of Pharmacy from which he graduated in 1878. He then attended Trinity Medical School and graduated from there in 1882 with a Medical Degree. Wilson moved to Edmonton, Alberta later that year and opened an office at the corner of 105 Street and 99 Avenue, later opening an office on Namayo Avenue. In 1886 he married Emily C. Lee and together they had one son, Charles, and two daughters, Violet and Marjorie, all of who attended McKay Avenue school. Wilson was elected in 1885 to represent Edmonton in the Northwest Council where he remained a member until the Council was dissolved in 1888. At this time he returned to the Assembly and became its first Speaker. For many years Wilson was the president of the Edmonton Liberal Conservative Association, and from 1895-1896 he was Mayor of Edmonton. In 1907 he was elected president of the Alberta Medical Association. Wilson died on December 17, 1909, leaving his wife and three children. Charles Wilson was a member of the 19th Alberta Dragoons, serving overseas in World War I. He was killed in France in 1916. Marjorie Wilson married Colonel Panet. Violet Wilson was involved in broadcasting and writing about Alberta history.
CUSTODIAL HISTORY:Mrs. N. Radford deposited accession PR1970.0218 in the Provincial Archives of Alberta in 1970 on behalf of Miss Violet Wilson, and deposited accession PR1971.0428 in the Archives on behalf of Mrs. A.H. (Marjorie) Panet in 1971. Mrs. Radford interviewed Miss Violet Wilson in 1970 and likely received the items at the time, to be deposited in the Provincial Archives of Alberta. The oral history can be found in PR1970.0170.
SCOPE AND CONTENT: Fonds consists of newspaper clippings, invitations, postcards, and photographs that deal with scenes and personalities, such as H.C. Wilson and Alexander Taylor, of early Edmonton and area.
ARRANGEMENT NOTE: The records were numbered prior to deposit in the Provincial Archives of Alberta and this order has been retained.
