HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: William Kensit worked for McDermid Studios before branching out on his own in about 1935. He worked as a photographer, and established the William Kensit Studio about 1952. His Studio operated in Edmonton, Alberta until 1971, and included industrial, commercial, and portrait photography. In the 1940s and 1950s, the William Kensit Studio did photographic work for the Edmonton Journal. The William Kensit Studio, which at some point became simply Kensit Studio, was located at various locations along Jasper Avenue. William Kensit was also a prominent member of the Alberta Professional Photographers Association.
CUSTODIAL HISTORY:The records were purchased by the Provincial Archives of Alberta from Kensit Studio Limited (PR1972.0163) in 1972 and from Oma Marler, of Portraits by Oma Ltd. (PR1980.0227) in 1980.
SCOPE AND CONTENT: The fonds includes purchase receipts from the William Kensit Studio and the Kensit Studio, but consists predominantly of images on a wide variety of subjects including royal visits, sports and sports teams (skating, hockey, basketball, curling, football, boxing, swimming), the Edmonton Commercial Grads, oil wells, stores and businesses (interiors and exteriors), banks (interiors and exteriors), schools, churches, houses, other buildings, bridges, construction sites, fires, refineries, airplanes, playgrounds, picnics, parades, fashion, convocations, school groups, formal dinner, business functions, formal dances, numerous portraits and various Edmonton other views.
