HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: | Dates of founding and/or dissolution:
The Alberta Building Standards Council was created under the terms of the Alberta Uniform Building Standards Act 1973 c. 85. The first Council was appointed in 1974. The Council was dissolved effective March 31, 1994 by the proclamation of section 71(2) of the Safety Codes Act (S.A. 1991 c. S-0.5), which repealed the Uniform Building Standards Act.
Functional responsibility:
The Alberta Building Standards Council was responsible for
- advising the Minister of Manpower and Labour and the Minister of Labour on the regulation of the use, construction or demolition of buildings;
- acting as a liaison between the Minister and federal government agencies responsible for the creation and application of the National Building Code and with any other persons or agencies interested in construction standards;
- hearing appeals to the orders of building inspectors regarding the use, construction or demolition of a building, under section 9 of the Alberta Uniform Building Standards Act; and
- any other duties as assigned by the Minister.
Predecessor and successor bodies:
In 1994, the functions and responsibilities of the Council were transferred to the Safety Codes Council.
Administrative relationships:
The Alberta Building Standards Council reported to the Minister of Manpower and Labour (1973-75) and the Minister of Labour (1975-94).
Administrative structure:
The Council was made up of members appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council, who designated one member as Chairman.

SCOPE AND CONTENT: | Sous-fonds consists of administrative and operational records of the Council. The records were generated through the performance of the Council's mandated functions, including hearing appeals and acting as liaison with outside agencies concerned with the creation and administration of provincial and national building codes and standards.
The sous-fonds consists of correspondence, forms, meeting minutes, agendas, and submissions. |
