SCOPE AND CONTENT: | Series consists of Department of Social Services and Community Health records documenting the department's responsibility for providing social services programs in the province, including the administration of programs for mentally and physically handicapped children and adults. In 1972 the Services for the Handicapped Branch was opened and operated through Regional Offices. The offices underwent a mandate change in 1983 and became Consultation Services Units. These units provided community services to adults with mental and/or physical handicaps by monitoring committees struck to deal with certain handicaps; funding a variety of agencies and independent groups providing services to handicapped persons; providing consultative services to agencies and groups; providing referral services to the public to appropriate resources; and providing resources for information. The series contains records from the Lethbridge district office relating to the Comprehensive Community Based Services System. Records include annual reports, minutes, agendas, general correspondence, financial statements, and research and planning records. |
