LEVEL OF DESCRIPTION: Series
No.: GR0023.002SF.0002
TITLE: Inquests series
DATE RANGE: 1905-1928
EXTENT: 16.25 m of textual records
ADMINISTRATIVE
SCOPE AND CONTENT: The series consists of files pertaining to inquests conducted by coroners into deaths either by violent or unfair means or by culpable or negligent conduct of others under circumstances that require investigation by a coroner and jury. The records may include the coroner’s declaration that an inquest is required, depositions of witnesses, correspondence, police reports, newspaper clippings, witness testimony, the coroner’s final report, and financial records related to the fees of witnesses and the coroner.
RELATED RECORDS: Files pertaining to deaths investigated by coroners but did not result in an inquest can be found in the Coroners series (GR0023.002SF.0001). Prior to the proclamation of Section 15 of the Alberta Coroners Act(S.A. 1906, c.15), there was no requirement for coroners to submit inquest files to the Department of the Attorney General. The inquest files remained in the judicial district where the inquest took place. For inquests prior to 1905, see the Inquests series in the Judicial Districts of Calgary (GR0023.007SF), Edmonton (GR0023.009SF), and Macleod (GR0023.016SF).
GENERAL NOTE: Several finding aids are available. File lists for individual inquests are available for GR1966.0166 and GR1967.0172. Alphabetical card indexes to inquests by last name of the deceased individual are available in GR1972.0082 and GR1972.0371.
