TITLE: Civil files

EXTENT: 615.40 m of textual records. -- 467 microfilm reels.
ADMINISTRATIVE
SCOPE AND CONTENT: The subseries consists of case files, chamber books (1916-1917, 1922-1924) and procedure books (1907-1971) pertaining to the civil cases heard by the Supreme Court of Alberta based in Edmonton. The files may contain statements of claim, counterclaims, judgments, orders, correspondence, and other related legal documents.
ARRANGEMENT NOTE: The documents are arranged by action number. These files form parts of the Edmonton Courthouse's Supreme Court Civil-Middle Series (SC.MS), 1924-1951, and the Supreme Court Civil-New Series (SC.NS), 1951-1971.

Prior to 1968, divorce files were originally interfiled with the Supreme Court of Alberta (Edmonton) civil cases. While most of the divorces were removed from the civil cases to form a separate filing system (described as GR0023.009SF.0003.0003), some divorce files may still be found among the civil cases (primarily in GR1983.0001). To locate divorce files that remain within the civil case files, please consult the civil procedure books (GR1986.0375, microfilm only), to identify the case number of the parties involved and request that case number from the Middle or New Series of GR1983.0001.

Divorce case files prior to 1924 remain interfiled with the civil files and are available only on microfilm (GR1986.0375).

GENERAL NOTE: This series may contain civil case files from the former Judicial District of Athabasca. A name index is available as part of the file list for GR1969.0305. The procedure books (1907-1971) and case files (1912-1915) are available on microfilm only (GR1986.0375) in the Sandra Thomson Reading Room. Case files from 1915-1924 are available only as master microfilms (GR1986.0375). Please consult the Reference Archivist.
