ADMINISTRATIVE
HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: The Sunwapta Broadcasting Company, Limited was formed by G.R.A. (Dick) Rice and Hans F. Nielson, following their acquisition of the CFTP radio station in Edmonton, Alberta on November 1, 1934. The Company was incorporated November 26, 1934 under the Companies Act. The Company was issued a license and was allocated CFRN as its call letters, R for Rice and N for Nielson. CFRN Radio went on the air November 3, 1934. In 1954, the Sunwapta Broadcasting Company, Limited broadened its services to include television; CFRN-TV aired its first television signal in Alberta on October 17, 1954. The CFRN-TV was an affiliate of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) Television network. On April 7, 1961, an agreement was made with Spencer Caldwell to form a new television network. On September 30, 1961, CFRN-TV aired its last telecast as a CBC affiliate as CBC was establishing its own station in Edmonton. On October 1, 1961, CFRN-TV became an affiliate of the CTV Television Network Limited. Following approval by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) on April 25, 1988, Dr. Rice transferred ownership of his shares of Sunwapta Broadcasting Company to Electrohome Limited of Kitchener, Ontario; Sunwapta Broadcasting thus became a division of Electrohome, a company Rice felt had a similar philosophy to his own. In 1992, Electrohome sold the two CFRN radio stations to Standard Broadcasting Corporation Limited of Toronto, Ontario. Soon after the television station's name was legally changed to CFRN Television - a division of Electrohome. In 1995, Electrohome and Baton Broadcasting Incorporated entered into strategic alliances, and in 1997 the two merged as Baton assumed Electrohome stations in exchange for Baton shares. In 1999, after acquiring all CTV shares, Baton Broadcasting changed its name to CTV Incorporated (Inc.). In 2000, Bell Globe Media purchased CTV Inc.
