ADMINISTRATIVE
HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH:

The Alberta Music Teachers’ Association (AMTA) was founded on December 15th, 1932, by Clara King, Florence Teets, and other interested Edmonton music teachers, as a means to promote and support musical instruction by qualified teachers, organize musical events in the province, and to provide entertainment to visiting performers and adjudicators. The organization was incorporated in 1934. In 1935, AMTA would join with similar associations in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and British Columbia, to help found the Federation of Music Teachers’ Associations, later the Canadian Federation of Music Teachers’ Associations (CFMTA). In 1947, the Alberta Registered Music Teacher Act passed in the legislature, giving AMTA the right to register music teachers in the province and they changed the name to the Alberta Registered Music Teachers’ Association (ARMTA). ARMTA became a professional registered association in 1982. The head office of ARMTA has been part of the Edmonton branch since 1986 and there are additional branches in Calgary, Fort McMurray, Lethbridge, Lloydminster (a joint branch with the Saskatchewan Registered Music Teachers’ Association), Medicine Hat, Red Deer, and an additional branch responsible for the rest of the province. In 1998, ARMTA founded the Alberta Music Education Foundation to provide funding for musical study and performance.

ARMTA participates in the CFMTA’s National Music Writing Competition and also sponsors a music writing competition in Alberta. In addition, along with the Alberta Choral Federation, the Alberta Band Association, the Alberta Music Education Foundation and Alberta Kodaly, ARMTA is also involved in Music Conference Alberta on an annual basis.

The executive consists of the following officers: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Past President; Board Representatives: ARMTA Provincial Representative and CFMTA Representative; and a number of Conveners.
