HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Nelles Victor Buchanan was born in Crystal City, Manitoba in 1890 and first came to Edmonton in 1899 with his parents. His father, Rev. T. C. Buchanan, was Minister at MacDougall Methodist Church (now MacDougall United). T. C. Buchanan was also the founder of Alberta College in Edmonton in 1903. Continuing the family involvement Nelles Buchanan served on the Board of Govenors of the College for 51 years.; Nelles graduated with an Arts degree from Victoria College, University of Toronto in 1915. In that year, Nelles Buchanan enlisted in the Canadian Field Artillery and was awarded the Military Cross in 1917 for conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. By the time Nelles left the service in 1919 he held the rank of Major.; After World War I Buchanan received a law degree from the University of Alberta in 1921. In 1941 he was appointed King's Counsel. The arrival of World War II saw Buchanan return to military service where he commanded the 61st Battery. When he returned from the war Nelles served as a senior partner in a law firm until he was appointed a judge in 1952. By 1953 he had attained the position of Chief Judge of the District Court of Northern Alberta, a position he held until his retirement in 1965.; Community and church work also claimed the time of Nelles Buchanan. He held various positions at the local, regional and provincial conference levels of the United Church, various hospital associations and community clubs. Judge Buchanan was also the Chariman of the Alberta Blue Cross and President of the Canadian Hospital Association. Nelles Victor Buchanan passed away November 26, 1986 in Edmonton at the age of 96.
CUSTODIAL HISTORY:The fonds was donated to the Provincial Archives of Alberta by Mrs. Gladys Buchanan March 5th, 1987.
SCOPE AND CONTENT: The fonds consists of the following series : Personal correspondence; Judge's notebooks; Buchanan family; Health association activities; United Church of Canada; Education; Early law career; Politics; Speeches; Photographs; Certificates and honours; Alberta Trusts Company Ltd.; and, Miscellaneous.
