Includes: 206 photographs, 7 negatives, 1 transparency, 1 printing plate | | ADMINISTRATIVE | | HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: | Mary Hawrelak was born to William and Anastasia Hawrelak in Wasel, Alberta in June of 1920. As one of the youngest students, Mary received special permission from the Alberta Minister of Education to enter Edmonton Normal School. Upon graduation in 1938, Mary began teaching at the Willow Range School in the Two Hills School Division. In 1940, Mary married Bill Lobay, who was instrumental in establishing the Department of Agriculture’s rat patrol program in 1951. The Lobays had three children: Gary, Carol and David.From 1940 to1943, Mary Lobay taught in the Smoky Lake and Bear Lake School Divisions. From 1950 to 1969, she taught for the Edmonton Public School Board. Mary Lobay received both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Education from the University of Alberta in 1963 and 1966, respectively. In 1969, Mary Lobay became the first woman to be appointed Assistant Principal by the Edmonton Public School Board, a position she held at Victoria Composite High School until 1981. In 1988, Mary Lobay was made a Member of the Order of Canada for her exceptional contributions to the community. Through her executive involvement in many organizations, Mary Lobay served the City of Edmonton, the Province of Alberta, and Canada as a whole. These organizations include the Edmonton Police Commission, the Fort Edmonton Historical Foundation, the Ukrainian Canadian Professional and Business Federation, the Vanier Institute of the Family, the Canadian Multiculturalism Council, the University of Alberta Senate and Board of Governors, the Salvation Army, and the Progressive Conservative Party. In 1992, she received an Honourary Doctorate from the University of Alberta for her continued involvement in the education field.Dr. Mary Lobay’s brother, William Hawrelak, also played a prominent role in the City of Edmonton. He served as mayor for three terms between the 1950s and 1970s. He died while in office in 1976. Hawrelak Park, located in the Edmonton River Valley, is named after him. Mary Lobay passed away on Dec. 2, 2009. | | SCOPE AND CONTENT: | Fonds consists of records accumulated by Dr. Mary Lobay during her career as a teacher including curriculum materials, yearbooks, school histories, and reports.
