The fonds also includes 1.10 m of textual records, 10 oil paintings, and 3 audio compact discs. | ADMINISTRATIVE | HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: | Donald Kew, a well-known editorial cartoonist and musician, was born in 1960 in Weyburn, Saskatchewan. In 1965, Donald Kew's family moved to Vauxhall, Alberta where Kew completed his schooling. In 1978, Donald Kew moved to Edmonton, Alberta to attend Grant MacEwan College, where he completed a two-year art program. His drawings were first published in 1978 in the Taber Times and in 1979 in the Lethbridge Herald. In 1985, he began doing weekly sports cartoons for the Edmonton Sun newspaper and provided regular weekly editorial cartoons for a number of newspapers throughout Alberta. His cartoons have appeared in publications across the country. Donald Kew also dabbled in music, painting and film. He recorded his first CD, Lost and Found in Okotoks, in 2002 and performed at the Canmore Folk Festival that same year. Kew also created several paintings for the first art show at the Picture Hook Gallery in Okotoks. He also worked as a background actor in independent productions and co-penned the script East Meets West, which he later filmed and edited in 2003. In January 2004 Donald Kew died at the age of 43 after a battle with cancer. | SCOPE AND CONTENT: | The fonds consists of materials created or collected by Don Kew and dating from 1985-2003. The majority of the materials consists of original illustrations boards of cartoons published by the Edmonton Sun, and caricatures of politicians and illustrations published in various weekly newspapers.
