| | LEVEL OF DESCRIPTION: | Fonds | | No.: | PR0066 | | TITLE: | Frank Sidney Grisdale fonds | | CREATOR: | Grisdale, Frank Sidney | | DATE RANGE: | 1921-1976 | | EXTENT: | 0.60 m of textual records | | ADMINISTRATIVE | | HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: | Frank Sidney Grisdale was born and educated in Quebec, being a member of the first graduating class of Macdonald College in 1911. Between then and 1913 when he became agronomist at the Olds School of Agriculture, he spent a year at the Dominion Experimental Farm at Lethbridge and Edmonton. In 1915 he was transferred to the Vermilion School of Agriculture where he served as principal and agronomist. When he returned to Olds four years later, it was as principal of the School of Agriculture, a post he held until 1930. At that time he was elected M.L.A. for Olds constituency in the United Farmers of Alberta party and became the Minister of Agriculture from 1934 to 1935. In 1942 he moved to Ottawa to become Deputy Foods ; Administrator of the Wartime Prices and Trade Board, eventually being promoted to the position of Chairman and Foods Co-ordinator of the Board. At the request of Premier Joseph Smallwood he served as Chairman of a Royal Commission studying food production and requirements in Newfoundland in 1949. For his wartime services he was named a Commander of the British Empire in 1947, and in recognition of his valuable contributions to agriculture in Alberta he was admitted to the Alberta Agriculture Hall of Fame in 1972. On completion of his work in Eastern Canada he returned to Alberta, living in Red Deer until 1960 and then in Olds, where he died on the 29th of December, 1979. | | CUSTODIAL HISTORY: | These records were donated to the Provincial Archives of Alberta by Frank Grisdale's son, Dr. L.
